The End of Cheap Oil & Gas – Kenneth E. Boulding

14 September, 15:44, by admin

“In 1859 the human race discovered a huge treasure chest in its basement. This was oil and gas, a fantastically cheap and easily available source of energy. We did, or at least some of us did, what anybody does who discovers a treasure in the basement – live it up, and we have been spending this treasure with great enjoyment” – Kenneth E. Boulding (1978)

And using it up precariously with wanton abandon, finding any possible way to exploit the abundant energy we’re soon to run out of. Much like the fable with the ant saving food for the winter and the grasshopper playing all summer long until he finds no food to live on in the winter. The problem here is we don’t have a big brother that we can rely on when our energy stores are depleted. It may be a long winter’s night indeed.

What incentives are needed for society and governments to truly start taking the need for alternative energy sources seriously? The affluent won’t adopt new technologies because they can afford to pay for energy prices, therefore, we need to force the issue any way we can so that renewable energy sources can become accessible for all.

As we are finding out, the party is really over.

Spring Gardening

24 May, 16:49, by admin

Spring garden preparations are essential to making sure everything is ready for the oncoming growing season. You won’t need a flower shop if you get things ready in March and April so that you have a great selection of summer flowering plants that you can harvest and use for special occasions instead of having to buy flowers online or use a flower shop. Gardening tools and helping your dad get ready for this busy time in the garden can be a brilliant fathers day gifts.

Prepare borders and flowerbeds so that the soil is well nourished and ready for summer. Mulch and top soil are vital, along with a good fertiliser or bone meal powder to keep extra nutrients in the soil. Easy to grow bedding plants such as pansies, primroses and violas can last well into June and July if you’re lucky but their main purpose is to provide a seasonal splash of colour to spring borders.

Even when the weather seems good in March and April there is still the danger of frost, so protect bedding plants and harden off gently if the weather is bad. May is generally considered safe for transferring summer flowering plants into the garden.

With the spring bulbs come the inevitable crops of weeds in the garden but they need not be a problem if you keep up a regular maintenance routine. Scrap moss from paths and drives as soon as you see it and remove persistent weeds at the root for best results.

Perennial plants from last season that have been standing over winter can now be pruned back or cut down to encourage new growth. Fruit trees and shrubs can be cut back as well, but if buds are present they are best left alone. Roses are very susceptible to black spot and mildew so spray them every couple of weeks through to September as a preventative measure.

Hedges are best established when planted in spring so this is the best time to put in yew, box or laurel saplings along with conifers and evergreen trees.

Fruit trees are notoriously attractive to wildlife so prepare them in spring and you should be good to go right through summer. Prune much of the previous year’s growth and cover with netting to keep the birds out when fruits appear later in the year. Maintain your lawn with seed in bare areas and wait until the weather dries out before you unleash the lawnmower and use the highest blade setting for the first cut of the season.

Early potatoes, peas, carrots and broad beans are perfect to sow at this time of year and you can also scatter drifts of flower seeds straight into plots. This should ensure a few months of home grown cut flowers so you don’t need to buy flowers online or use a flower shop.

Offering solutions for environmental protection

17 May, 15:30, by admin

It is important to keep in mind what is truly at stake in what we’re doing. I used to say as a joke to my friends that if I were to travel I would go to places where there are absolutely no people, places like the Amazon, the Himalayas, and even the North Pole. Why? Because, years from now when I’m with my grandson at the museum looking at the last tree, I’ll say, “You know, there used to be to be such things standing next to each other called a forest.” The youth will look at me skeptically, and reply, “Get out of here. No way!”

Funny? Sadly with the current state of dialogue about environmental protection I feel the joke become less and less funny every year.

And this includes the dialogue about new ‘green energy’ products and solutions. The way the products and solutions are advertized generally repeat the same lines over and over again; it will solve a lot of our current energy problems, imagine a future with [x] convenience, and we’re almost there someone is doing something about it. I see this theme repeated again and again on gadget blogs, technology new, and news about alternative energy.

Wasn’t the reliance on technological convenience and over consumption of both renewable and renewable resources what got us here in the first place? Fixing the solution by demanding more green products (while a step in the right direction) fits right back onto the logic of assuaging our beliefs that things can keep going on like this. Throwing money into both the cause and cure of the solution is only marginally effective.

What I want to hear more about is how these solutions will help us protect the environment. Whether this be a shout-out to get involved (and more uncritical pep-talk is not ‘getting involved’) or an offer to do something specific locally (wherever that locality is).

This situation if anything should be a wake-up call for people to question some of the fundamental premises of the status quo. What if the whole system is what’s wrong? Perhaps so, perhaps not, but stop to think for a minute. Behind all the talk of paper-pushing bureaucrats, politicians, and propaganda puppet-master ‘opinion leaders’ the scientists talking about climate change and environmental protection say the same thing: We need the world to stop polluting. We need to stop destroying our natural environment.

So can we? The main solution has already been proposed. So don’t let the people trying what they can to keep us from achieving the solution, by proposing new solutions and other problems (and fixes) from distracting what the Climate Change conferences, or alternative energy should be about. We have a choice now to adapt or face the consequences. What do you choose?

Renault’s to be Used for Celebrities.

Celebrity Charity Ride

I don’t know if I missed something or not in the article, but why would that be the last time that they are allowed to visit there again. That is the only part in the whole article that I did not agree with, especially on the part about car insurance companies not raising money for charity. If it is for a good cause, which it really was, I don’t see why they cannot come through their anymore.

I think if they are looking forward to still trying to earn some money, they can try and see if they can go to a different county and raise money. Over the years they have raised a lot of money well enough to do what they were trying to do. As always, I am a big fan of hearing about celebrities raising money for different purposes. People who have money and are rich, think about others that do not have anything and are struggling. Those are the celebrities that have big hearts. It is always kind to do start their own charity.

I really didn’t find anything negative about this article, besides the fact I think that they should continue on their same charity event, to raise even more money. I think that they have done such a terrific job in raising as much as they did.

Overall, this article was immaculate. Some of my all time favorite articles to read, are the ones whom I hear about celebrities raising money for charity. This inspires me and was reeally heart felt. I love giving to those who are in need.

Spring festival

11 April, 07:00, by admin

Traditionally the fourth Sunday of Lent has been known as Mothering Sunday and is not a fixed day each year as it is in other parts of the world. Today it is known simply as mothers day. This date goes back centuries in the history of the Church in England. Much as they do today, people would worship in their local parish church, but it was deemed necessary for these worshippers to visit the main church or Cathedral, once a year. The time selected for this pilgrimage was the middle of lent.

In Victorian times, children who worked in service were allowed to return home to see their mothers and family each year, on this day. This generally applied more to daughters, as they tended to go into domestic service in the ‘Big House’, or in houses in one of the major English cities. The tradition of the mothers day gift stems back to the wild flowers the children would pick along the roadside as a gift for their mother or to leave as an offering in the church. As that no longer applies today, mother’s day is now the day children make a card for their mother and send flowers as a mothers day gift.

Going back further in history, it is thought that the spring festival of ancient times to the mother goddesses was the true origin of mother’s day. Flowers were nearly always used as decoration at festival time the only thing that has changed is that people tend to send flowers instead of using them for adornment. It was as early as 250 years before Christ that the Romans honoured Cybele their mother goddess while the Greeks had the mother of their gods and goddesses, Rhea. More recently, the Americans chose to honour Mrs Anne Jarvis on their first mother’s day commemoration. On that day they chose to hand out carnations, as carnations were her favourite flowers. Later on red carnations came to symbolise a living mother while white carnations indicated a mother who had passed.

The history of mother’s day, although interesting, does not detract from the need to acknowledge the role that mothers play on a day to day basis. It is the one day when time can be taken to show appreciation for the hard work and sacrifices mothers make not only for their own children but for the community as a whole. To send flowers is just a symbol of what is truly felt and they are gratefully received and appreciated by every mother who receives them. One final tip, it’s always best to shop around when looking to pay for flower delivery to make sure you get the best deal.

Why use a house clearance company?

01 September, 16:53, by admin

I’m sure you are familiar with removal companies, but have you ever considered using a house clearance company?

If you need to move and cant bear the thought of removing the last bits of items from you home that you don’t want then a house clearance company is for you. Another scenario – maybe you have inherited a property, may be a deceased relative and don’t think you can take on the task of removing everything – then again a house clearance company would be perfect.

A house clearance company basically does what it says on the tin, they arrive and completely strip your home. If they find anything valuable they will (or should!) inform you before disposing of it. They should also arrange secure disposal of any delicate material such as bank statements and other personal documents.

Next time you are thinking of hiring a skip, take a second to think about using a house clearance company instead – save yourself some stress!

How to do the best from waste management?

18 August, 16:28, by admin

Efficient waste disposal is the aim of every industry. Not only is disposing of waste in a safe way good for the environment it is also cost effective to the business. Organizations that are seen to adopt environmentally conscious processes and policies are considered to be more ethical than those that don’t. Horizontal, vertical, mini and midi are all different types of waste balers that are available to hire or lease by companies. They each have their own pluses and minuses.

Horizonal Baling Equipment is particularly effective waste baling where there is a high throughput. A distinct advantage of these is that they require minimal hands on operation due to them being at least semi-automatic. Vertical Baling Machines are best suited for lower throughput and are more labour intensive so they require time consuming and skilled operation by staff.

Mini and Midi Baling Equipment is highly versatile due to its indoor and outdoor operation. The bales that these produce require less handling because they are smaller. Waste compactors can reduce the size of domestic and industrial wastes by up to 90% and the spare space can hence accommodate more waste. This is particularly useful in waste management.

As with many other forms of industrial equipment, Waste Balers can be hired or purchased. Depending upon your business either option has its own advantages and disadvantages. Hiring can be more expensive in the long term but better for cash flow and from a tax efficient point of view. The choice is yours.

Energy Star Qualified Products – Good for Your Budget and the Environment

11 June, 17:36, by admin

The Energy Star program was created by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in an attempt to limit energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Savvy consumers know to look for the Energy Star logo when shopping for appliances, heating and cooling equipment, home electronics, office equipment, or lightning.

By purchasing one of the certified products you can be sure that energy expenses will be lower due to reduced consumption. You can often save up to 30% on your energy bill. The EPA has also extended the Energy Star label to cover new homes, buildings, and manufacturing plants.

At Home

Home electronics such as TVs, DVD players, cordless phones, and audio equipment use electricity even when on standby mode.

TV sets are probably the most popular and the most energy consuming in this category. An average household has at least two of them. In order to qualify for the Energy Star label, a TV has to be at least 30% more energy efficient than a standard unit not only when it is on, but also when on standby. There is a wide variety of Energy Star compliant TVs to choose from, whether you prefer LCD or plasma. They are manufactured by Hitachi, Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, and many others.

Another group of energy absorbers at home are appliances such us washers, fridges, freezers, and electric heating and cooling units. When it comes to dish and clothes washers, the Energy Star versions not only use less energy, but are more water-efficient when compared to standard models.

Heating and cooling equipment usually generates the highest costs, so pay extra attention to energy consumption data when changing one of these units.

In The Office

Offices use many electronic devices, so it is obvious that they use lots of energy. What is more, most office equipment is left on 24/7. It is really important to make sure that energy consumption is kept to a minimum.

Energy Star labeled devices use less energy to perform regular tasks and automatically enter a low-power mode when not in use. As far as computers, certified models use as much as 70% less energy than those without active power management features.

Again, there are many companies that produce energy-efficient office equipment. Hewlett-Packard offers as many as 1,000 models of office products that have earned the Energy Star logo. These include notebooks, printers, scanners, and all-in-ones. Samsung proudly features that their entire line of notebooks and netbooks have qualified for the certificate.
